Kujira Ryukyu Inari Single Grain Whisky Review.

Kujira Ryukyu Inari Single Grain Whisky Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from CNS Wine & Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

We’re diving into Kuja Riaku Single Grain Whiskey. The name "Kuja" is the Japanese word for "whale," while "Riaku" refers to an island chain within the Okinawan region. The whiskey is distilled, aged, and bottled under the Masahiro Distillery, one of Okinawa's oldest. With traditions rooted in Japanese culture, the Masahiro team has committed to authenticity, from distillation to the final product, adding no artificial color and leaving it non-chill filtered. This whiskey is crafted using premium-grade Indica rice and black koji, which is typically reserved for high-grade sake, infusing a unique twist into the fermentation process. Now, when it comes to rice whiskey we have to set our minds a bit differently, since we tend to think corn or other grains when we hear whiskey.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 46%.

Mashbill: 100% Indica rice.

Area of Distillation: Okinawa, Japan.

Appearance: Light golden.

On the nose:
Instantly there are several layers of complexity. initially bringing to mind white peach, soft floral hints, and a delicate earthiness from the rice. There’s a warm, slightly sweet undercurrent reminiscent of peach wine or Moscato. As the aromas unfold, you’ll detect cedar, wood sugar, a hint of homemade caramel, and a touch of vanilla, each adding to a harmonious bouquet.

Taste:
The taste is where things get interesting. Earthy tones emerge, thanks to the black koji, adding depth to fruity notes of pear, apple, and pineapple. The interplay of caramel and light spice feels like biting into an apple slice dipped in caramel, blending sweetness and warmth. There’s a subtle woodiness, akin to cedar, that rounds out each sip with a gentle spiciness. As it finishes, cinnamon and five-spice add a lingering touch that perfectly complements the fruit-forward profile.

Finish:
Earthy yet sweet, and notably, it’s smooth without any harshness. For a rice-based whiskey, the flavors are impressively layered, blending floral, earthy, fruity, and spicy notes into a cohesive sip from beginning to end.

Final Thoughts:
Kuja Riaku Single Grain Whiskey is an excellent introduction to Japanese rice whiskey. For those seeking a high-quality, unique expression from one of Okinawa’s oldest distilleries, this bottle offers both tradition and innovation in every pour. This is a solid example for both a sipping rice whiskey and it should do great in a Highball cocktail.

Rating: B+ (Great).
