About The Last Call

If you’ve ever stood in front of a wall of whiskey bottles wondering whether you’re about to discover something incredible or waste your hard-earned money, you’re in the right place.

My name is Garret Hoover, and this site was built out of a simple idea: honest whiskey reviews without hype, fluff, or industry spin.

Like many people, my journey into whiskey didn’t start with rare bottles or hazmat proof monsters. It started with curiosity. I was poking around lightly into whiskey when I saw a bottle of scotch deem a tasting note as "meaty." This threw me off and I instantly started researching the bottle. Well, come to find out next to no one had reviewed it. So I pulled the trigger and asked myself, what stops me from reviewing it?

The deeper I went, the more I realized something. We might know how the spirit starts off and we might know the finished product, but there's so much that happens between the two that we don't know. Taking the time to learn the process and tell the stories behind the bottlings is what I am here for. Showcasing you should never paint yourself in a corner on only drinking a specific whiskey or brand. Expand your visions, try things new.

During my early times of reviews I learned something quickly. No everyone wants to hear about the limited editions, the allocated bottles, the one offs and rare bottles. They want to know what’s in the glass, how it tastes, and whether it’s worth their money. Rather that is a budget bottle or that allocated bottle.

That’s where this site comes in.

What You’ll Find Here

Every review on this site is built around three core principles:

  1. Honesty over hype.

  2. Education over exaggeration.

  3. Value over price tags.

When I review a bottle, I’m not chasing trends or trying to impress anyone with overly poetic tasting notes. I focus on:

  • The production process.

  • The age and proof.

  • The finishing techniques.

  • How it compares to similar bottles.

  • Who it’s actually for.

Whether it’s a high-proof Canadian hazmat, a port-finished bourbon, a smoky Islay Scotch, or a craft rye finished in something experimental, the goal is the same: give you a clear picture of what to expect before you buy.

My Approach to Tasting

Whiskey is subjective. What tastes like dark chocolate and cherry to me might taste like oak and baking spice to you. That’s part of the fun.

My reviews are structured, but not robotic. I take my time with each pour. I revisit bottles more than once when possible. I pay attention to:

  • Aroma development.

  • Texture and mouthfeel.

  • Balance.

  • Finish length.

  • Complexity versus simplicity.

Most importantly, I ask: Would I reach for this again?

That question matters more than flowery language.

The Mission

This site exists for everyday drinkers, curious newcomers, seasoned enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to learn more about whiskey without the gatekeeping.

You don’t need a $500 bottle to enjoy great whiskey. You don’t need to memorize mash bills. You don’t need to pretend you taste seventeen different fruits in one sip.

You just need curiosity and sometimes a buddy.

My mission is to break down bottles in a way that makes the category more approachable while still respecting the craft behind it.

Transparency Matters

This site may participate in affiliate programs, which means I may earn a commission if you purchase through certain links. That support helps keep reviews coming.

However, no affiliate relationship influences my opinions or grades. If a bottle misses the mark, I’ll say so. If something overdelivers, I’ll say that too.

Credibility matters more than clicks.

Responsible Enjoyment

All content on this site is intended for individuals 21 years of age or older. Whiskey is meant to be appreciated responsibly and in moderation. This platform is about education, exploration, and enjoyment — never excess.

Beyond the Blog

In addition to written reviews, I also create video content and tasting breakdowns. The goal across every platform is the same: consistency, clarity, and honest evaluation.

If you have a bottle suggestion, collaboration idea, or just want to talk whiskey, I’m always open to hearing from readers.

At the end of the day, this isn’t about chasing rare bottles or building a collection for show. It’s about the experience in the glass, the stories behind the distilleries, and the community that forms around a shared appreciation for craft spirits.

Thanks for being here.

It doesn't matter what you drink, or how you drink it, as long as you enjoy it.

— Garret
