Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Toasted Rye Whiskey Review.

Elijah Craig Kentucky Straight Toasted Rye Whiskey Review.

Over the past year, Rye whiskey has truly started marking a name for itself. In my opinion, big distilleries were preparing for such a shift years ago, getting their rye aging and preparing for the "bourbon rush" people to start looking around for something a bit different. And while your craft distilleries were always more willing to work with rye, it seems your big distilleries are finally willing to commit. I always looked at rye as the IPA of the whiskey world.

Personally I the few times I had rye, it was always an uneventful dram. This was mainly because so many ryes come from MGP, at I just wasn't prepared for the herbal/medicinal flavors. However, over the past year, I really grown fond of rye, really seeing that rye can be a great dram and I crave that herbalness in a good rye.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 47%.

Mashbill: 51% rye, 35% corn, and 14% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Heaven Hill Distillery Kentucky.

Finishing: Custom toasted New Oak Barrel.

Appearance: Mahogany.

On the nose:
Chocolate and rye spiciness with the toasted barrel adding sweet, charred layers. There’s also a touch of vanilla. There's a bit of nuttiness reminding me of cashews and peanuts. A distinct rye grain character, no real herbal or floral notes as some ryes bring. A hint of crème brûlée. Basically a rich, caramelized sweetness that blends beautifully with the other flavors. A faint berry note, possibly blackberry, shows up as I keep going back.

Taste:
On the palate, this whiskey delivers a luxurious mouthfeel. The spiciness from the rye is balanced by the sweet notes from the toasted barrel, think crème brûlée, caramel, and butterscotch. There’s also a pleasant nuttiness, reminiscent of hazelnut, which complements the chocolate undertones. The finish is long, with lingering oak and spice.

Finish:
What’s impressive about this toasted rye is how it manages to soften the typical rye spice, making it an excellent entry point for bourbon lovers looking to explore rye whiskey. The secondary cask adds a layer of complexity that elevates this bottle. The lingering spiciness along with the rye grain notes mix with that hazelnut give it a great finish.

Final Thoughts:
Elijah Craig’s Toasted Rye Whiskey is a standout release in the growing rye market. With an SRP of around $55, it’s a solid buy. It’s an excellent example of a toasted rye, with the toasted barrel adding a unique twist to the classic rye profile. While Elijah Craig Toasted Bourbon is a love/hate bottle for some, I think this release is a great rye to showcase that rye can be more than just herbal and spice. For those who are more inclined towards bourbon but are curious about rye, this is the perfect bottle to start with. The complexity of flavors—from the chocolate and nuts to the berries and crème brûlée, makes it a sip worth savoring. If you can find it for under $60, I’d say you’re getting a great deal.
