Rogue Spirits American Single Malt Whiskey Review.

Rogue Spirits American Single Malt Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Rogue Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Rogue Spirits, more known for the ale, has been distilling for nearly twenty years in Newport, Oregon. Here they are taking their knowledge in brewing ale and rolling that spirit over next door to their still. Rogue, based in Newport, Oregon, began as a brewery in 1988 before expanding into spirits in 2003. The origins of Dead Guy Whiskey are rooted in community and creativity. Originally crafted for a local Mexican restaurant’s special event, the whiskey’s success quickly secured its place in Rogue’s permanent lineup.

The whiskey is distilled from 100% two-row malted barley, which is the same barley used with their brewery, but with a different yeast strain to enhance its alcohol content. Rogue’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives this whiskey an “ocean-aged” character, similar to coastal Scottish whiskies. While this bottle does not yet carry an age statement, Rogue has announced plans to include them in future releases, a detail that will undoubtedly excite the whiskey community.

Age Statement: N/A (Rogue states it is +5 years old).

ABV: 40%.

Mashbill: 100% 2-Row Malted Barley.

Area of Distillation: Newport, Oregon.

Appearance: Pale Golden.

On the nose:

Right off the bat, the nose is malty with barley-forward notes. There’s a pleasant grain aroma that unfolds into light vanilla and hints of charred wood. A surprise note of citrus, perhaps grapefruit, peeks through, giving the whiskey a slightly IPA-like maltiness. As the aroma develops, I also picked up faint floral hints, like freshly picked rose petals.

Taste:

That barley sweetness shows up again, with a dustiness that hints at waxiness and cocoa. There’s a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg, alongside cedar and sandalwood. The charred oak adds depth without overpowering the more delicate flavors. A faint salty note, it might be projected since it's aged near the ocean, which rounds things off nicely. At the end of the day, it is still 100% Barley and it showcases with those grain notes.

Finish:

Lingers with peppery undertones, more cedar, and a dash of freshly grated cinnamon. The grapefruit sweetness detected earlier persists, leaving behind a finish that’s reminiscent of an IPA - fitting for a brand with roots in craft brewing.

Final Thoughts:

I’ve been on an American single malt kick lately, and Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey brings something truly different to the table. Rogue’s coastal climate lends the whiskey a lighter, more nuanced complexity compared to the heavy oakiness you might find in Single malts from other parts of the US. The whiskey’s soft, balanced profile with a blend of sweetness, maltiness, and woodiness is refreshing, especially for those looking to try something new. At the end of the day, this is single malt though and though. As long as you go in knowing these factors, I think it's one you'll enjoy.

Rating: B+ (Well above average).

Cost: $54.99 for 750ml.
