Yushan Taiwanese Blended Malt Whiskey Review.
Yushan Taiwanese Blended Malt Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from CNS Wine & Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Over my whiskey journey, I have only just discovered how great Taiwanese whiskey can be. Honestly, there are some hidden gems that get overlooked constantly from the region. Now, Yushan is one of those brands that I didn't initially know until I reviewed their Sherry cask finished single malt. And I was a HUGE fan of that release. A quick rundown, the Yosan whiskey lineup comes from Taiwan's NAT Distillery, known for their Omar single malt whiskies. And from what I've been told, releases some amazing whiskey. The name "Yosan" is inspired by Taiwan’s highest peak, Mount Jade. This release is their blended malt using both Ex-Bourbon and Sherry casks.
Age Statement: N/A.
ABV: 46%.
Mashbill: 100% Malted Barley.
Area of Distillation: Taiwan.
Appearance: Light golden hue.
On the nose:
Sweet aroma greets you with notes of pear, apple, and a hint of smokiness. It’s not an intense peat like a traditional Scotch, but rather a soft, earthy smokiness that adds a layer of complexity. Lots of fruit-forward notes like ripe apples and pears, dominate. It mingles with a light touch of citrus zest and just a whisper of spice. A hint of caramel and vanilla rounds it out beautifully.
Taste:
Soft, sweet orchard fruits like apples and pears take the lead. Layers of baking spices, like cinnamon and clove, adding some warmth. The light peat notes show up again, but does not overpowers, the fruity profile. This subtle smokiness acts as a bridge between the whiskey’s sweet and spicy notes, offering a rounded, cohesive tasting experience.
Finish:
The finish is surprisingly complex for its 40% ABV, leaving a lingering, balanced warmth on the palate. Right from the initial sip to the closing notes, Yosan carries a smooth, creamy mouthfeel that holds onto the sweetness from the sherry cask, while allowing the bourbon cask’s spicier notes to make a final impression.
Final Thoughts:
For a relatively young whiskey, it showcases an impressive depth of flavor that feels both familiar and refreshing. The sherry and bourbon casks contribute distinct characteristics that are beautifully balanced: the sherry casks bring a fruity richness and gentle sweetness, while the bourbon casks provide subtle spices and a touch of charred woodiness that completes the profile. It’s a bottle that could easily find a place in your regular lineup.
Rating: B+ (Well above average).
Cost: $44.99 for 700ml.
