Yushan Taiwanese Sherry Cask Finished Single Malt Whiskey Review.
Yushan Taiwanese Sherry Cask Single Malt Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from CNS Wine & Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Over my whiskey journey, I have only just discovered how great Taiwanese whiskey can be. Honestly, there are some hidden gems that get overlooked constantly from the region. Now, Yushan is one of those brands that I didn't initially know. However, The Yosan whiskey lineup comes from Taiwan's NAT Distillery, known for their Omar single malt whiskies. And from what I've been told, releases some amazing whiskey. The name "Yosan" is inspired by Taiwan’s highest peak, Mount Jade. This specific release is their single malt that has been finished in a sherry cask. Sherry cask for me is always a fun finish. Though, it can be a make or break depending on the type of sherry cask used and the timeframe of finishing.
Age Statement: N/A.
ABV: 46%.
Mashbill: 100% Malted Barley.
Area of Distillation: Taiwan.
Finishing: Sherry Cask.
Appearance: Dark, rich mocha.
On the nose:
The Sherry cask finish is prominent, adding layers of depth and character. The aroma is rich and oily, with notes of dark figs and plums. There’s a subtle but warming spice profile weaving through the nose, with clove and cinnamon taking the lead. If you search past the heavier Sherry notes, you’ll catch faint hints of the malted barley. So far this seems like a perfect after-dinner dram, rich and satisfying, without any harshness or off-notes to disrupt the experience.

Taste:
The dominant flavor here is reminiscent of homemade blackberry jam, thick and slightly tangy. This dark berry note feels like it’s fresh from a farmers' market or crafted by hand, giving a natural, almost rustic vibe. Alongside blackberry, hints of blueberry, fig, and plum come through, adding layers of juicy, dark fruit flavors.
Finish:
These finish is rich and oily, coating the mouth and leaving a lasting impression. As it lingers, you’ll start to pick up a hint of chocolate in the finish. This chocolatey note teeters between dark and semi-sweet. There's a touch of creaminess too, evoking the indulgent experience of a small slice of cheesecake topped with dark berry compote, a perfect blend of richness and texture.
Final Thoughts:
Yosan has crafted a single malt that is approachable yet complex, perfect for anyone looking to explore Taiwanese whiskey or simply enjoy a beautifully layered dram. If you’re intrigued by Taiwanese whiskey, Yosan’s Sherry cask-finished single malt is a fantastic starting point. With its decadent dessert-like qualities and sophisticated finish, it’s a bottle I’ll gladly return to.
