Backbone Bourbon Company Estate Uncut Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Backbone Bourbon Company Estate Uncut Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Backbone Bourbon Company, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Now, when it comes to Backbone Bourbon Company, I've had my fair share of releases. Personally, they take the NPD (non producing distiller) to another level. Based in Indiana, they craft spirits by sourcing from MGP and other distilleries, creating high-proof, distinctively finished bourbons and blends. This release, “Estate,” is an homage to their journey, and I was thrilled to dive in to this complex blend.

Batch one’s mash bill details a blend of three different mash bills and containing two different finishes in those blends. One of those mash bills was a high wheated, which instantly caught my attention. I’m a sucker for a good wheated bourbon.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 55%.

Mashbill: A blend of; 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley; 51% corn, 45% wheat, 4% malted barley; and 60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Finishing: Blend contained bourbon finished in Cognac and double barreled bourbon.

Appearance: Deep dark mahogany.

On the nose:
A symphony of dark, rich sweetness. The oak is prominent but refined, carrying a delicate balance of soft sweetness and bold expression. The Cognac finish introduces dried fruits—think dark plum, fig, and subtle grape—layered with a waxy yet spicy wheat characteristic. There’s also a unique spiciness reminiscent of cedar or sandalwood. Herbal rye notes and sweet corn meld seamlessly, all underscored by earthy char and brown sugar.

Taste:
The first sip confirms the promise of the nose. Sweet dark fruits from the Cognac finish dominate initially, with raisin, plum, and fig notes leading the way. The rye’s spice is understated but present, while the wheat mash bill delivers a nuanced cedar or sandalwood-like quality. A gentle corn sweetness rounds things out, accompanied by a faint dustiness and a hint of pepper. The double-oak influence shines with a rich, velvety texture and a lingering chocolatey note—somewhere between dark chocolate and cacao. It clings to the palate beautifully, evolving as you savor it.

Finish:
The finish is long and luxurious, with a buttercream vanilla sweetness and brown sugar that evokes the top of a crème brûlée, charred to perfection. The lingering spice and oak remain gentle yet persistent, slowly fading like a song with the volume turned down. This bourbon drinks like an older product—its oaky refinement suggests an eight-year-old profile, if not even older. The balance between fruit, spice, and oak is masterful, leaving a memorable impression.

Final Thoughts:
This is a standout bourbon, no question. The blend is beautifully composed, with the Cognac and double-barrel finishes adding depth without overwhelming the spirit’s core character. Backbone Bourbon Company’s skill in partial finishes is on full display here, creating a whiskey that is bold, complex, and undeniably satisfying. It comes across as a well aged bourbon without adhering to an age statement and should be a bottle to hunt down.

Rating: A (Excellent).
