Backbone Bourbon Co Auld Bow-In 14 Year Old Single Grain Scotch Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Backbone Bourbon Company, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Auld Blow-In scotch stands out for its rarity and unique sourcing story. Backbone Bourbon, based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is known for its high-proof offerings, great blending, diverse sourcing, from MGP in Indiana to distilleries across Canada and Kentucky. The whisky originates from the now-closed Port Dundas Distillery, shuttered by Diageo in 2010.
Backbone Bourbon managed to acquire a limited supply before the facility’s operations ceased, resulting in just 300 cases of this bottling. Featuring a blend of barley, rye, and American corn, this Scotch offers a fresh take on single-grain whisky, challenging traditional norms. The story behind just a unique scotch plus the idea of tasting something from a distillery that no longer is in production, just sealed the deal for me.
Age Statement: 14 years.
ABV: 55%.
Mashbill or blend: Barley, rye and American corn.
Area of Distillation: Scotland.
Appearance: Pale golden.
On the nose:
The aromas begin gently, with delicate notes of barley bringing a waxy sweetness to the forefront. There’s a faint dustiness from the corn, while the rye introduces a subtle spice that adds dimension. A rich buttercream sweetness emerges, underpinned by light vanilla tones. The high proof is present but balanced, offering warmth without harshness. The wood influence is understated but effective, providing hints of char and spice.
Taste:
On the palate, the whisky retains its soft, approachable nature. The barley's waxy grain character dominates, complemented by a whisper of sweet, dusty corn. The rye’s spiciness is mild but impactful, introducing a soft herbal quality that lifts the overall flavor profile. Sweet notes of custard pie emerge, warm and comforting, while subtle orchard tartness dances in the background. As you keep visiting the pour, a bit of ethanol is present, but it is not overpowering or harsh.
Finish:
The finish is long and gentle, with the rye spice carrying the grain notes forward. Light wood sugars and lingering spices provide a satisfying conclusion. It’s not a whisky bursting with complexity, but it offers a refined simplicity that makes it highly drinkable.
Final Thoughts:
The Auld Blow-In Single Grain Scotch Whisky is a fascinating release, particularly given its backstory and limited availability. It delivers excellent value for a 14-year-old Scotch, especially one with such an approachable and versatile profile. While it lacks the depth and intricacy of more complex whiskies, it excels as an easy-drinking pour that awakens the palate without overwhelming it.
It’s straightforward, sweet, and grain-forward—a great introduction for Scotch newcomers or a reliable option for enthusiasts looking for something uncomplicated. Whether enjoyed as a starter to an evening or as a nostalgic nod to a bygone distillery.
Rating: B (Above average).
Cost: $69.99 for 750ml.
