Penelope Toasted 6 Year Rye Whiskey Review.
Penelope Toasted 6 Year Rye Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Penelope Bourbon. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Now I've really enjoyed what Penelope has been releasing for the past few years. While they only officially hit here in Indiana around mid 2023, by first experience with them was the Toasted Rye, and I was hooked. Now flash forward and Penelope has access to even more MGP stock since they are under the same roof. In 2023 I really loved the Toasted rye relasesed and that was using a 100% rye. Now here in 2024 they tweaked the mash bill just slightly, changed the char level, and gave it a solid age statement.

Appearance: Dark copper.
On the nose:
The nose is a harmonious blend of classic rye notes, presenting herbal and medicinal qualities typical of a 95% rye mash bill. The char from the cask adds an enticing layer of wood sugars and caramel, alongside a rich, deep chariness. There's also some hints of cinnamon, clove, and butterscotch. All wrapped in a subtle orchard sweetness reminiscent of fresh apples. There is a bit of warmth on the nose, but not to the point of being off putting.
Taste:
The toasted cask's influence becomes evident. There’s a great balance of char and oak, with a generous helping of sweet vanilla. The rye’s spiciness shines through without taking over the palate, allowing flavors of butterscotch and even a hint of brewed coffee to emerge. The richness is impressive, though it doesn't linger too long. While the rye's spiciness took center stage on the second sip, there was still that underlying orchard sweetness helping cut that spice.

Finish:
The finish is nice and straightforward, with a gentle peppery linger that wraps things up pleasantly. If you're someone who enjoys a charred whiskey, this one will definitely appeal to you. Even if you are not big into the Rye profile, that toasted cask really mellows the spice and should be much more approachable to many bourbon fans.

Final Thoughts:
Overall, I love this release. With its well-crafted profile and six-year age statement, this whiskey stands out in its category. As we move into fall, this whiskey promises to be a fantastic sipper, perfect for cozy evenings. How will that char cask influences the rye whiskey, just blows me away.
