Rogue Spirits Dead Guy Stout Cask Finished American Single Malt Whiskey Review.

Rogue Spirits Dead Guy Stout Cask Finished American Single Malt Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Rogue Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Over the past couple of years I've love doing deep dives into American single malt whiskey. Being a Scotch lover at heart, it makes me smile seeing more distilleries, big and small, playing around with malts.  Rogue, based in Newport, Oregon, began as a brewery in 1988 before expanding into spirits in 2003. The origins of Dead Guy Whiskey are rooted in community and creativity. Originally crafted for a local Mexican restaurant’s special event, the whiskey’s success quickly secured its place in Rogue’s permanent lineup.

The whiskey is distilled from 100% two-row malted barley, which is the same barley used with their brewery, but with a different yeast strain to enhance its alcohol content. What sets this whiskey apart is its aging process in Rogue’s in-house stout barrels. These barrels, initially used to age ale, are then filled with whiskey, creating a rich interplay of flavors over time. Rogue’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean gives this whiskey an “ocean-aged” character, similar to coastal Scottish whiskies. While this bottle does not yet carry an age statement, Rogue has announced plans to include them in future releases, a detail that will undoubtedly excite the whiskey community.

Now, I am unsure what is going on but It seems in 2024 I am seeing more and more stout cask finishing on the shelves, and I all about that. When it's done right it always hits for me.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 49.5%

Mashbill: 100% Two-Row Barley.

Area of Distillation: Newport, Oregon.

Finishing: In house Stout beer barrels.

Appearance: Dark amber.

On the nose:
The whiskey immediately captivates with a creamy vanilla aroma that recalls the frothy head of a stout. This creaminess is balanced by earthy malt notes and sweet grains, all underscored by a subtle waxiness. As the profile develops, layers of charred oak and caramel come through, accompanied by velvety chocolate and a touch of espresso. It’s an inviting and complex bouquet that reflects both the whiskey’s malt-forward base and its stout cask finish.

Taste:
The palate is equally engaging, offering a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel. The initial impression is one of dark chocolate and cacao, complemented by a creamy vanilla sweetness that carries through. Midway, the whiskey transitions into deeper oak char and caramel, with a distinctive stout-like quality reminiscent of the foam on a pint of Guinness. The drying effect and slight bitterness add complexity, balancing the sweeter malt notes. Throughout, the whiskey maintains a remarkable harmony between stout influence and its barley-forward foundation.

Finish:
The finish is long and satisfying, with lingering notes of peppery spice, chocolate malt, and creamy vanilla. It leaves a lasting impression that calls to mind the aftertaste of a great stout beer, rich, slightly bitter, and incredibly satisfying.

Final Thoughts:
Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey Stout Cask Finished is a standout in the world of American Single Malt Whiskey. Its innovative use of in-house stout barrels and meticulous attention to detail result in a whiskey that bridges the gap between beer and whiskey lovers. The interplay of creamy vanilla, dark chocolate, and malt-forward richness is masterfully executed, making this bottle a top recommendation for anyone intrigued by stout cask finishes. Rogue’s commitment to their craft shines through, and this pour will undoubtedly become a favorite for those who appreciate the artistry of brewing and distilling combined.
