Bhakta 1928 Straight Rye, Calvados, & Armagnac Review.
Bhakta 1928 A Blend of Straight Rye, Calvados, & Armagnac Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Bhakta Spirits, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Now Bhakta Spirits is somewhat of a newer producer of spirits. Started in 2019 Bhakta was founded by Raj Bhakta, who was the original founder of Whistlepig. Their 1928 release showcases creativity and skill, blending Rye whiskey with Calvados and Armagnac to create a one-of-a-kind spirit. Baku 1928 is a blend that combines traditions from different regions. It’s made up of 60% Rye whiskey from Indiana, 30% Calvados (an apple or pear brandy aged in Norway), and 10% Armagnac from France. The Armagnac includes vintages from as far back as 1928, with others from 1941, 1962, and 1973, giving the blend an average age of about 15 years.
So more than just "finishing" a spirit in specific barrels of Calvados and/or Armagnac, Bhakta takes it a step further to blend them. Quite unique from my point of view in today's spirit releases. Now, having such vintage spirits showcasing in such a way truly caught my eye. On top of that being a price point that seems to be fitting.

On the nose:
On the nose:
The initial aromas are warm and inviting, with notes of vanilla custard and sweet apples from the Calvados. A gentle char emerges, complemented by hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of caramel. The Armagnac adds a layer of dark fruit—plum and grape—rounding out a nose that feels both sophisticated and comforting.
Taste:
The flavor journey begins with a vibrant mix of orchard fruits—crisp apples, tart Granny Smiths, and sweet red delicious apples. Dark cherries and plums add depth, while gentle spices, including pepper, cinnamon, and nutmeg, create a layered complexity. There's a delicate pastry note, evoking freshly baked apple pie with a buttery crust. The rye provides a herbal spice that is balanced and never overpowering, enhancing the overall harmony.
Finish:
The finish is long, warm, and evolving. It lingers with notes of vanilla, caramel, and a subtle drying oakiness. Hints of tropical fruit, possibly influenced by the Calvados, weave in unexpectedly, adding intrigue to the conclusion. A gentle peppery tingle completes this luxurious experience.
Final Thoughts:
Baku 1928 is a masterpiece of blending. The combination of rye, Calvados, and aged Armagnac results in a spirit that feels like a labor of love—a creation born from passion and precision. The $69-$80 price point makes it an incredible value, given the quality and the story behind it. Whether you’re looking for a standout bottle for your home bar, a unique gift, or simply a remarkable whiskey to savor, Baku 1928 is a compelling choice. This is a whiskey worth savoring, sharing, and celebrating. An easy A+ recommendation.
