Lasso Motel Port Cask Finished Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Lasso Motel Port Cask Finished Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Lasso Motel, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Tonight’s pour comes courtesy of Lasso Motel, a newer name on the scene making waves with their creative approach to finished bourbons. This particular bottle—a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey finished in port casks. Transparency is front and center here. Lasso Motel sources their bourbon from Green River Distilling, who has been creating some amazing whiskey in recent time. They also share the exact mash bill for this release, which is appreciated. Finally, Lasso takes that bourbon and finishes it in a Port cask. Personally port finishing has been a favorite of mine and excited to see yet another option on the shelves.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 50%.

Mash bill: 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Green River Distillery.

Finishing: Port Cask.

Appearance: Rich dark amber.

On the nose:
Right from the first nosing, you’re met with a lush mix of aromas. The classic bourbon notes are still very present—sweet corn, buttery vanilla, and a touch of rye spice—but they're elegantly draped in the dark fruit elegance of the port cask. Think tart cherries, fig, plum, and even a hint of Luxardo cherry syrup. There’s a faint nuttiness mingling in the background, along with baking spices like clove and cinnamon. It all wraps up in a velvety, dessert-like warmth that evokes the scent of a freshly baked cherry pie.

Taste:
The flavor mirrors the nose with beautiful precision. Sweet corn and vanilla lead the charge, followed by rye’s herbal spice, but the texture is where the port influence truly shines. Tart cherry, soft plum, and fig make themselves known without overpowering the base bourbon. There's a charred fruit note, like scorched cherry or brûléed cocktail garnish, adding complexity and a touch of bitter char to balance the sweetness. Soft hints of leather and wine-like tannins round out the sip, with a subtle undercurrent of dark grapes playing through the mid-palate.

Finish:
Long and layered. The rye spice carries into the finish with a peppery pop, while the port cask lends just a whisper of dryness—maybe even a slight bitterness. It's not unpleasant, but worth noting. As the flavors fade, a delicate dance of baking spice, dried fruit, and a touch of toasted oak lingers beautifully.

Final Thoughts:
Lasso Motel’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon with a Port Cask Finish is a smart, approachable entry into the world of finished whiskeys. It manages to hold onto its bourbon identity while leaning gently into the sweeter, fruit-driven notes from the port. At $75, it's priced right for what it delivers: depth, transparency, and a bottle that looks just as good on the shelf as it tastes in the glass. The only minor quibble is a touch of bitterness in the finish, but it’s fleeting and doesn’t detract from the overall experience.

Rating: A- (Amazing).

Cost: $74.99 for 750ml.
