Bhakta 2012 Cask Strength Indian Single Malt Whiskey Review.
Bhakta 2012 Cask Strength Indian Single Malt Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Bhakta Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Here in Indiana we do not see many Indian whiskeys on the shelf. I'd say maybe five total in a given area. Which is an increase from basically zero a few years ago. Being a Scotch fan, Indian whiskey is quite an interesting spin on malt whiskey. Though it can be a dividing spirit for some. Now, when it comes to Bhakta, they are focusing on vintage spirits or unique expressions overall. While most of these are way out of my budget, the pure age on these do bring a big price tag. I've had two different spirits from their line up and I think the bottlings are very solid, specifically the blending and finishing job they did with their 1928 Rye.
Now, when it comes to 2012, this peaked my curiosity. Not only with the age statement, at cask strength, but they included the exact amount of days for the Armagnac barrels.

Age Statement: 10 Year.
ABV: 56.9% (Cask Strength).
Mashbill: 100% six-row North Indian Malted Barley.
Area of Distillation: Rajasthan, India. Finished in the USA.
Finishing: 1982 Armagnac barrels for 131 days.
Appearance: The whisky inside is a dark, rich yellow.
On the nose:
The aroma is a sensory delight, bursting with spices like cinnamon, clove, and cardamom. A malt-forward profile introduces soft notes of milk chocolate, paired with subtle floral hints of rose petals. The influence of the Armagnac cask shines through, offering whispers of poached pear, sweet apples, and a touch of fig. Beneath it all, there’s an earthy, almost peaty undertone that evokes comparisons to Scotch, balanced beautifully by a light oak char and a touch of leather.
Taste:
The first sip envelops the palate in a velvety embrace. It’s immediately full-bodied, with rich flavors of dark chocolate and ripe fruits like plums, figs, and apples. Spices carry over seamlessly, with cloves and cinnamon taking center stage. There’s a subtle smokiness—a nod to Scotch lovers—that pairs with an earthy sandalwood note. A touch of patchouli adds an intriguing layer, while the Armagnac finish leaves a refined sweetness of poached pear and caramelized apples.
Finish:
The finish is nothing short of elegant. It lingers with hints of crusty brioche bread, a touch of leather, and a gentle, smoky warmth. The interplay of earthiness, spice, and sweet fruit lingers long after the last sip, leaving a satisfying, well-rounded impression.
Final Thoughts:
Bakta 2012 is a masterpiece—a rare gem in the world of Indian single malt whiskey. Its 10-year age statement, cask strength robustness, and Armagnac finish come together in a harmonious symphony of flavors. A whiskey worthy of recognition among the best I’ve tried, including some iconic Scotch whiskies. Whether you savor it alone or share it with friends, this is a sip to remember. If you’re curious about Bakta and their innovative releases, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
