Baker's 7 Year High Rye Bourbon Whiskey Review.
Age Statement: 7 year 6 months.
ABV: 53.5%.
Mashbill: Undisclosed, but labeled "High Rye."
Area of Distillation: Kentucky.
Appearance: Dark amber.
On the nose:
Lots of classic bourbon notes right out the gate. Vanilla, caramel, and barrel char. There is that unmistakable Jim Beam nuttiness right up front as well. You do find a hint of rye spice, then fades, leaving a subtle minty earthiness and a touch of pepper. The nose is balanced but not overly complex. Fans of classic bourbon profiles will feel right at home here, though it may leave those craving a bolder rye punch wanting more.
Taste:
On the palate, Baker’s High Rye stays true to its classic roots but offers up some surprises. You’ll get all the usual bourbon hallmarks: brown sugar, vanilla cream, and a mild wood char from the cask. But the high-rye mash brings a sweet, earthy twist, with a noticeable minty freshness and a touch of pepper on the finish. Interestingly, a secondary sip starts revealing even more layers, a faint peach note, which lends a bit of lightness, and a surprise hint of green apple sweetness.
Finish:
For those who like letting their bourbon open up, this one might evolve in the glass, even bringing out a pleasant chocolate note over time. It’s an experience that seems to grow with each sip, surprising and delighting as it unfolds. Overall this is a bourbon drinker's rye. You get all these classic borubon notes and just a touch of that rye spiciness.
Final Thoughts:
For what it offers, I’d say it’s fairly priced. It’s not necessarily a “must-have” if you’re watching your bourbon budget. I think it is a solid example of what "high rye" can be, even if I wish it was showcased a bit stronger in those notes. But, at the end of the day, I gotta give credit where credit is due. What Baker's brings with this release is really good.
