Kunhai Whisky Earth Taiwanese Whisky Review.

Kunhai Whisky Earth Taiwanese Whisky Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from CNS Wine & Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Kunhai Whiskey is a newer brand hitting shelves is several areas. And I'll be honest, the artwork really caught my eye. I've dabbled in Taiwanese whiskey as I've been able to and I have to give the area credit. They bring some great flavors to the whiskey world. This is the Earth release from Kunhai. Which is one of three bottles. The other two being Sky and Sun, which were both enjoyable pours for me. Each of the names has a tie to Taiwanese culture. Earth is meant to mirror the sensations of the colorful, culinary night markets that fill Taiwan’s streets at sundown.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 40%.

Mashbill: N/A.

Area of Distillation: Taiwan.

Appearance: Light honey.

On the nose:
On the first sip, there’s a beautifully light smokiness, earthy rather than overpowering. It’s reminiscent of a lightly peated scotch, offering a subtle smoky note that is restrained. The earthy peat is quickly complemented by a light, sweet floral note, almost like lavender. This touch of floral sweetness mingles with hints of apple, reminiscent of freshly pressed apple juice. It’s a crisp, natural sweetness that contrasts beautifully with the earthy base. The oak presence comes across softer like a cedar or sandalwood. Overall very well balanced.

Taste:
The taste mimics the nose pretty closely. You get that light bit of smoky, peaty note. No overpowering at all. As the earthy tones settle, dark berry-like flavor, though not overly sweet. A hint of floral notes continues from the nose. There’s a satisfying dark caramel undertone, slightly toasted and rich, which adds a velvety mouthfeel. The taste profile is layered yet balanced, providing an experience that feels both mysterious and comforting.

Finish:
The gentle sweetness remains, more pear-like than plum. It feels bright and fresh, adding a clean, crisp note to the lingering finish. There is also a light char note from the casks mixing with that subtle spice that a warming quality on the palate.

Final Thoughts:
Kunai Earth is a worthy addition to any whiskey collection. I’d gladly pay even a bit more for this quality, it’s a beautifully blended whiskey. For those interested in expanding their horizons into Taiwanese whiskey, or for anyone looking for a daily sipper with depth, Kunai Earth is an impressive option. The “day and night” concept is skillfully embodied here, capturing Taiwan’s essence through a balanced, intriguing pour. This is a whiskey I’d recommend both to newcomers and seasoned whiskey enthusiasts alike.
