Kunhai Whisky Sun Taiwanese Whisky Review.

Kunhai Whisky Sun Taiwanese Whisky Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from CNS Wine & Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Kunhai Whiskey is a newer brand hitting shelves is several areas. And I'll be honest, the artwork really caught my eye. I've dabbled in Taiwanese whiskey as I've been able to and I have to give the area credit. They bring some great flavors to the whiskey world. This is the Sun release from Kunhai. Which is one of three bottles. So far I've really enjoyed the Sky and I'm a huge fan of Earth. Each of the namings has a tie to Taiwanese culture. The Sun expression captures Taiwan’s colorful coexistence of light and dark, old and new, energy and ease.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 40%.

Mashbill: N/A.

Area of Distillation: Taiwan.

Appearance: Light golden hue.

On the nose:
Sky offers a delightful sweetness with prominent notes of green apple tartness and a hint of lychee. There’s also a subtle touch of peat, which adds an intriguing complexity without being overpowering. It reminds me of Glenlivet 12 year. Subtly sweet and fruity profile combined with delicate wood notes reminiscent of sandalwood or cedar.

Taste:
The palate continues showcasing that green apple tartness paired with caramel.Giving me vibes of a caramel-dipped apple slices. Smooth, sweet fruit characteristics with hints of milk chocolate and toffee. You also get a bit of floral notes, like a greenhouse. The spicy wood notes from the cask become more pronounced. Very well balanced by earthy undertones and a refreshing citrus finish.

Finish:
It has a medium to long finish. You still get that sweet green apples and caramel. A touch of spicy cedar with a light pepperiness. There's a hint of citrus, reminiscent of freshly juiced orange, which adds a refreshing touch. Overall for a 40% ABV the finish is quite great with the cling and profile.

Final Thoughts:
It balance of sweetness, earthiness, and floral notes creates a memorable profile that I can easily recommend. Even for 40% ABV this showcases how a whiskey can still have a good profile and great cling. Yet again, this is another Taiwanese whiskey you should keep an eye out for.

Rating: B (Above average).

Cost: $44.99 for 700ml.
