13th Colony Distilleries Barrel Aged Gin Review.

13th Colony Distilleries Barrel Aged Gin Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from 13th Colony Distilleries, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Over the past few years, 13th Colony Distilleries has truly been making a name for itself. Starting off with a solid Bourbon and Rye and most notably the Double Oaked Bourbon. They also been hitting the shelves with a lot of positive feedback on their Gin and Vodka. Being a Gin fan long before doing spirit reviews, the moment I was told this was being released I couldn't contain my excitement. I love Gin and even more so, barrel aged Gin.

After reading up on the release with a high proof point, the use of a Rye cask, plus a finishing time, that excitement grew. This gin is aged for one year in rye whiskey barrels and bottled at a bolder ABV compared to most gins on the market. It’s an experimental spirit that leans into whiskey territory without losing its gin soul. The use of 95/5 rye barrels that should imparts a subtle spice and depth that enhances rather than overwhelms the gin’s botanicals.

Age Statement: 1 year.

ABV: 57.5%.

Mash bill: 100% neutral grains.

Area of Distillation:

Finishing: 1 year in an Ex-Rye Whiskey Barrel.

Appearance: Pale gold.

On the nose:
Right away, you’re hit with a burst of citrus. Freshly squeezed oranges, with a hint of grapefruit. There’s a light pepperiness, spiciness, and a light bit of coriander. The spice from the rye barrel starts to show through. Bringing a light bit of caramel, rye spice, and a light oak note.  What’s interesting here is how the barrel aging doesn't overpower the gin but instead enhances the natural botanicals.  I also picked up a root beer note, almost like a root beer hard candy, that adds a delightful sweetness to the mix. The balance between the spicy, herbal notes and the sweet, oaky character is impressive.

Taste:
The flavor profile is equally dynamic. It opens with that root beer note, like the root beer hard candies. Following up is a light bit of smokiness. Sweet caramel and wood sugars from the rye barrel bring warmth and balance to the gin’s inherent botanical brightness. Upfront, there’s a lively citrus pop—like an orange crush soda—with underlying pepper and sassafras that remind me of a smooth root beer. Vanilla sweetness and herbal depth linger on the palate, making each sip layered and satisfying.

Finish:

The finish is warm and spicy, with the barrel’s oak and rye spices slowly fading, leaving a sweet, herbal note behind. It’s rich, balanced, and remarkably smooth given the high ABV. This gin’s finish would appeal to whiskey drinkers, but gin lovers won’t feel like they’ve strayed too far from home.

Final Thoughts:
13th Colony’s Barrel-Aged Gin is outstanding. For the price, this limited edition bottle is a phenomenal value. Whether you’re enjoying it neat or mixing it in a cocktail, it offers a depth of flavor that both whiskey and gin lovers will appreciate. The barrel doesn’t overshadow the gin; instead, it complements and enhances the botanicals in a way that’s rich, spicy, and balanced. This one’s a grab in my book and I’m already worried about running out.

Rating: A (Amazing).

Cost: $54.99 for 750ml.
