Now I am always keeping my eyes peeled for brands to checkout and the other day while on that hunt I ran across Larado Whiskey. Essentially Larado is based out of Colorado where they are sourcing a whiskey from Indiana and bringing it back to Colorado for aging. Personally, I think this is a great idea and I love seeing the transparency of Larado's process. For this release we do see something that is quite uncommon, a wheat whiskey.
You might be thinking this is a typical mash bill for such a release, but it is far from that. Not only are they choosing a mash bill using 95% wheat but also keeping a solid age statement on it. Typically we see wheat being used as an accent grain, which is does quite well. I've had some experience with this level of wheat being used in other releases. On the surface this should be an easy going pour and pack a good layer of wheat spice to the mix along with some sweet characteristics.
Age Statement: 6 years & single barrel.
ABV: 45%. (Single Barrel).
Mash bill: 95% Wheat, 5% Malted Barley.
Area of Distillation: Indiana & aged in Colorado.
Appearance: Smoky orange.
On the nose:
On the nose:
Right away, the whiskey pulls you in with soft, dessert-like notes. It is giving me vibes of a royal icing, sweet but not quite buttercream, and a lovely undercurrent of banana sweetness that bordered on tropical. There’s a faint, oily richness accompanied by hints of caramel and light char. But what really stood out was the clear impression of bananas foster: caramelized banana, a touch of vanilla, and maybe even a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream stirred in. All of this without any harsh ethanol or off notes. It’s a gentle, complex aroma that exceeded my expectations for such a high-wheat whiskey.
Taste:
It opens soft and sweet with a subtle spiciness underneath. That cedar-like note I often associate with wheat came through, adding a light woodsy character. While the banana from the nose didn’t dominate the palate, it did return on the finish—light, slightly charred, and laced with vanilla and caramel. The mouthfeel is smooth with a soft cling, appropriate for a whiskey at 45% ABV. It’s approachable and clean, with the oak playing a leading role alongside the mellow sweetness from the wheat.
Finish:
Lingering just long enough, the finish brings back a bit of the banana fosters profile: toasted fruit, creamy vanilla, and a hint of spice. It doesn’t overwhelm, but it definitely invites a second sip. With each taste, there’s a little more oak, a little more sweetness, and that comforting, daily-drinker charm.
Final Thoughts:
Larado’s Single Barrel Small Batch Wheat Whiskey is a pleasant surprise. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, it’s simply delivering a well-made, well-balanced pour that leans into its high-wheat identity. You’re getting transparency, a distinctive mash bill, a respectable age, and a whiskey that drinks smooth and easy whether you’re by the bonfire or winding down your day. It’s not overly complex, but that’s part of the appeal. It's an enjoyable whiskey that I’d happily revisit and recommend for both neat pours and casual cocktails.
