Patrón Sherry Cask Aged Añejo Tequila Review.

Patrón Sherry Cask Aged Añejo Tequila

Patrón isn’t usually the brand that gets enthusiasts buzzing, but this bottle had quietly caught my attention for years before it vanished from shelves. When I finally stumbled across it on a clearance rack, curiosity won out. A tequila aged exclusively in sherry casks is still a rarity, and for someone easing deeper into tequila while already loving sherry influence, this felt like a gamble worth taking.

This expression starts with Patrón’s 100% Blue Weber agave and skips the typical bourbon barrel route entirely. Instead, it is aged for at least two years in Oloroso sherry casks, with no secondary finishes or prior bourbon influence. That transparency alone is refreshing, especially in a category where finishing details can sometimes be vague. Oloroso isn’t my personal favorite sherry style, but the concept of full-term aging in those barrels is undeniably intriguing.

Age Statement: +2 years.

ABV: 40%.

Mash bill: 100% Blue Weber Agave.

Area of Distillation: NOM 1492.

Appearance: Golden with an orange tint.

On the nose:
Cooked agave leads the charge right away, followed by earthy, vegetal tones and a soft peppery edge. There’s light oak, a touch of vanilla, and hints of caramel, but very little overt sweetness. A faint dried fruit character lingers underneath, with nutty notes typical of Oloroso casks and a surprising hint of char that adds depth without harshness.

Taste:
The sip is soft and inviting, with gentle sweetness and restrained dark fruit notes like fig and plum. Cooked agave remains present, supported by light earthiness, subtle nuttiness, and a mild charred oak influence. Mid-palate, a quiet apple-like sweetness emerges alongside touches of leather and oiliness, keeping the profile balanced and interesting without overwhelming the agave.

Finish:
The finish is clean and moderate in length, with lingering agave sweetness, dried fruit, and a soft oak-driven dryness. It fades gracefully rather than clinging, which suits the overall profile well.

Final Thoughts:
This tequila doesn’t drink like something fully aged for two years in Oloroso sherry casks, coming across more like a restrained finish than a heavy-handed maturation. That turns out to be a strength rather than a weakness. The agave stays front and center, the sherry influence adds nuance instead of dominance, and the result feels thoughtful and well-executed.

At the original eighty-dollar price point, this would be a tougher sell, but sixty dollars or less, it becomes much easier to recommend. A pleasant surprise that rewards curiosity and patience.

Rating: B+ (Great).

Cost: $37.99 for 750ml.
