Ardbeg Eureka Committee Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review.
Ardbeg is no stranger to ambitious special releases, and Eureka immediately stood out once I dug into the story behind it. Created as a tribute to the Ardbeg Committee itself, this bottling represents a thoughtful, almost celebratory approach to experimentation rather than a gimmick-driven release. Ardbeg puts out multiple special bottles every year, and while they do not always land perfectly, I am always intrigued by their willingness to push boundaries, especially when peat and sherry are involved.
What finally pulled me in was the concept. Instead of a straightforward finish, Eureka blends two distinct components: whisky matured in PX sherry casks and a roasted malt whisky, which are then brought together and allowed to marry in ex-bourbon casks. On paper, it sounded like something that could either be chaotic or brilliant.
Age Statement: N/A.
ABV: 52.2%
Mash bill: 100% barley.
Area of Distillation: Isle of Islay, Scotland.
Finishing: Ex-PX sherry casks.
Appearance: Dark golden hue.
On the nose:
The nose opens with lush, dark fruit right away. Plum, fig, and grape lead the charge, clearly driven by the PX sherry casks. Beneath that is a layer of toasted earthiness from the roasted malt, bringing along notes reminiscent of roasted coffee beans and light mocha. Classic Ardbeg peat is present but restrained, offering a sweet, smoky character rather than an aggressive punch. Lemon zest weaves through everything, adding brightness and lift. There is no harsh alcohol, no youthful edge, and nothing out of place. It is rich, inviting, and surprisingly polished.
Taste:
The palate begins differently than expected, with roasted espresso and chocolate-mocha notes hitting first. The mouthfeel is slightly oily, coating the palate in a way that feels deliberate and luxurious. As the sip develops, lemon zest returns, followed by dark fruits emerging mid-palate rather than upfront. Plum and fig add depth and sweetness without overpowering the peat. The smoke builds gradually, bringing a briny, seaside quality that feels unmistakably Ardbeg. The influence of the ex-bourbon casks becomes clear here, helping the flavors meld into something greater than the sum of its parts.
Finish:
The finish leans smoky and savory, with lingering peat that recalls campfire embers and a faint cigarette-style smokiness. Salty sea breeze, light seaweed, and earthy notes hang on, leaving a gentle tingle behind. Dark fruit fades slowly, allowing the smoke and brine to take the final bow.
Final Thoughts:
Ardbeg Eureka is a complex yet cohesive limited release that succeeds where many experimental bottles fall short. While it does not quite reach the heights of standout releases like BizarreBQ, it delivers a rich, rewarding experience that showcases both PX sherry and roasted malt beautifully. The lack of an age statement is the most noticeable drawback, especially at its price point, but the quality in the glass helps soften that critique.
For fans of smoky, peated Scotch with depth and character, this is a bottle worth grabbing if you find it at a reasonable price.
