I received this spirit as a review sample from Brother Justus, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Brother Justus American Single Malt Whiskey isn’t just another craft bottle on the shelf, it’s a story poured into glass. Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, this whiskey is a tribute to a real bootlegging legend who lived before and through Prohibition. Brother Justus believed that while whiskey was illegal to make it wasn’t immoral. Through his knowledge of copper pot stills and whiskey, he assisted over 1,600 family owned distilleries make a living during the times of Prohibition. And that spirit clearly lives on in the modern vision behind this distillery.
The water is sourced from the Mississippi River less than a mile from the distillery. The barley is sourced from about 30 miles away. Even the barrels are Minnesota through and through, crafted from locally harvested American white oak grown in one of the coldest oak-growing climates in the world. Using 100% malted barley and a cold-climate aging profile.
Brother Justus doesn’t just talk about local, they live it.

On the nose:
On the nose:
What immediately hits is sweetness, green apple, orchard fruit, soft barley sugar, and warm granola drizzled with honey. The barley is present without shouting. There’s a floral note mixed with gentle cinnamon and toasted grain that feels closer to a mature Irish single malt than a young American whiskey. The nose is clean, gentle, and shockingly developed for its age. There’s no harsh ethanol, no sharp edges, just soft oak, warm grain, and fresh sweetness.
Taste:
The mouthfeel delivers beyond expectation. Lightly oily, gently coating, and surprisingly full-bodied for 43% ABV. Sweet malt leads the charge immediately, followed by green apple, honey, oats, toasted grain, and warm oak spice. As it opens up, caramel drizzle sneaks in, and the grain character deepens into something resembling honey graham crackers. The oak never overpowers, instead, it supports with spice and structure. For its youth, this whiskey shows incredible control, it doesn’t drink hot, thin, or raw. Instead, it balances sweetness, texture, and spice beautifully.
Finish:
The finish is soft but confident, warm oak spice, lingering grain sweetness, and light fruit roll gently off the palate. Nothing overstays its welcome.
Final Thoughts:
For a two-year-old American single malt, this pours well above its age statement. The attention to sourcing, barrel selection, and process shines through in every sip. It enters a competitive space and still holds its own. Brother Justus has built something special here. If this is what two years looks like, the four- and five-year future releases could be phenomenal. Its beautifully made, thoughtful, and approachable American single malt that shows real promise and drinks with unexpected maturity
