Five & 20 Spirits Deep Water 7 Year Old Rye Whiskey Review.

Five & 20 Spirits Deep Water 7 Year Old Rye Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Five & 20 Spirits link here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Over the past year I've had the pleasure of reviewing several releases from Five and 20 Spirits. Their standard rye is a great intro to craft rye whiskey, Even at the "younger" age, it really had potential. Seeing they offered a seven year bottling really hit well with me. Now Five & 20 is basically split into two sides, the brewery and spirits. The great thing is all their grains are locally grown in New York and they even list the farms on their website. On top of this, they are aging, distilling, bottling, everything on their own. Plus, when it comes to finishing they are using their own in house wine, sherry, and beer casks. Honestly, seeing this level of craft is amazing. It truly makes the profile your own vs sourcing things from other areas.

After hearing Five & 20 was releasing a 7 year version of their rye that I already enjoyed at the younger age, I came into this pour with very high hopes.

Age Statement: 7 year.

ABV: 49.5%.

Mashbill: 80% NY Rye, 20% Barley Malt.

Area of Distillation: Westfield, New York.

Appearance: Golden amber hue.

On the nose:
There's a layered complexity right out the gate. Right away you’re greeted with spicy rye grainsorange zest, and deep oakiness. Earthy, sweet notes that with rye bread and even hints of rum-like spice, as if finished in a rum cask. Oak, vanilla, and caramel are present as well, combining with a light touch of medicinal herbals, scones, and sweet tobacco.

Taste:
The taste delivers everything promised by the nose and then some. It begins with an almost eucalyptus-like herbal spice, unfolding into layers of bready yeastdark char, and sweet caramel. The evolution on the palate is remarkable, first spicy and herbal, then richer and darker, with oaky tannins and a touch of pepper. As it lingers, you get subtle notes of green apple tartness, reminiscent of apple pie with a higher portion of Granny Smith apples.

Finish:
The finish is long, smooth, and flavorful, with a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. It clings beautifully to the palate, leaving behind hints of vanilla custardcinnamon, and clove before rounding off with that signature green apple tartness. It’s a harmonious finish.

Final Thoughts:
Five & 20 Spirits Deep Water Rye Whiskey is a masterclass in craft distilling. It is a premium pour that delivers well beyond expectations. The fact that it’s a fully in-house operation, using local grains and aging the whiskey themselves, further solidifies its place as a standout in the craft distillery scene. This rye will go toe to toe with other big brands on my shelves and I have a feeling, it will come out unscathed.

Rating: +A. (Perfection).
