Four Finger Distillery Frankenstein Whiskey Review.
Four Finger Distillery Frankenstein Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Four Finger Distillery. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Four Finger Distillery is a hub of creativity in the Indiana craft spirits. I've had the pleasure of reviewing a few of their other releases prior to this one, and always been a big fan. Now, if you've never heard of Four Finger Distillery, they were once known as 1205 Distillery. The name change was to give them a better identity. The name itself comes from a situation during construction of the distillery. The master distiller lost his pinky finger to a table saw. Since then Brad, the master distiller, has been diving deep into all types of sprites to create and release.
Here’s where thing with Frankenstein Whiskey. It is crafted from the remnants of a local brewery, Flat 12, that sadly had to close its doors. Instead of letting the last batch of their beer fade away, Four Finger Distillery purchased and reimagined it. They blended various Flat 12 beers, distilled the mix, and aged it to create a one-of-a-kind spirit. This reincarnation is why they aptly named it "Frankenstein."

On the nose:
On the nose:
You’re met with a complex bouquet of scents that blend beer characteristics with whiskey elements. Initially, there’s a distinct hoppy aroma, like a IPA, but this quickly mellows as notes of charred oak and vanilla come through. The hoppy nose is accompanied by a delicate sweetness, bringing in a creamy, almost custard-like undertone. There’s a crispness that feels almost like grapefruit, accompanied by a hint of pine and citrus zest. It’s a vibrant, botanical aroma that transitions into something sweeter, think berry jam with a slight tartness. The balance of whiskey warmth and hoppy brightness, is a great first impression.
Taste:
The beer influence comes through strong, yet refined, giving the whiskey a familiar, almost nostalgic, quality for beer lovers. A light bitterness reminiscent of a Red Ale, tempered by a smooth, oaky base. But this isn’t just a beer in whiskey form, it’s layered with complexities that are unique to spirits. The hoppy bitterness is complemented by a touch of earthy spice, which is likely due to the barrel aging. There’s a hint of cinnamon, though subtle, adding a warming spiciness that rounds out the hoppiness. This is where the whiskey really shines, as it starts to take on a creamy vanilla character that gives it a rich mouthfeel.
Finish:
The mid-palate also reveals more of that berry tartness hinted at in the aroma. Here, it leans towards dark fruit, think blackberries or raspberries, with a mild, balanced sweetness. There’s even a whisper of apple-like freshness, bringing a hint of acidity that brightens the flavor profile. The whiskey delivers a long-lasting finish like a Killian's Red Ale.
Final Thoughts:
Frankenstein Whiskey is a bold, imaginative release, and Four Finger Distillery has managed to honor both whiskey and beer in a single pour. With its hoppy notes, earthy spice, and creamy undertones, it’s perfect for those looking for something new and unexpected. Priced at $50, this limited release is a must-grab for whiskey and beer lovers alike. It's a well-executed hybrid that’s both fun and flavorful. This is a limited run, due to it coming from Flat 12, and can be found at the distillery and a few shelves around Indiana. So in my opinion, grab it while you can.
