Abduction Whiskey Straight Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Abduction Whiskey Straight Bourbon Whiskey

I received this spirit as a review sample from Abduction Whiskey, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

There is something refreshing about a brand-new whiskey company built on pure passion. Abduction Whiskey, based out of California, is only about six months old, and the story behind it feels familiar in the best way. A blue-collar chiller mechanic with a love for whiskey decided to take the leap and start his own company. That kind of leap is something many of us dream about, and it is hard not to root for someone who actually does it.

Abduction Whiskey 4 Grain Straight Bourbon comes in at 45% ABV and is aged between 3 to 4 years. The barrels are sourced from MGP, a producer widely respected for quality bourbon and rye. Rather than simply bottling sourced whiskey, Abduction selects and blends the barrels to create their own expression.

As a four-grain bourbon, this blend likely includes corn, rye, wheat, and malted barley. Most bourbons stick to three grains, so the addition of wheat adds another layer of complexity. Wheat can soften the profile while also contributing a subtle, spicy wood-sugar character that plays differently than rye. When done right, a four-grain blend can be dynamic and balanced. When done wrong, one grain can disappear.

Age Statement: 3 - 4 years.

ABV: 45%.

Mash bill: N/A. (corn, rye, wheat, barley from MGP).

Area of Distillation: Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Appearance: Dark golden hue.

On the nose:
The nose opens with sweet, buttery corn and rich toffee. There is an immediate butter-toffee character that feels decadent. Rye spice brings a light herbal and slightly medicinal edge, a signature often associated with MGP’s rye stocks. A touch of pepper, sweet vanilla, and light barrel char round things out.

There is also a crisp fruit sweetness that comes across like Honeycrisp apples. It does not smell youthful. There is no harsh ethanol bite or off-note. Instead, it leans closer to a 4 to 5 year profile, with all four grains clearly contributing. The barley adds a faint waxiness, while the wheat introduces a gentle, spicy warmth beneath the sweeter layers.

Taste:
The first sip is surprisingly expressive. Fresh apple sweetness hits up front, almost like freshly pressed Honeycrisp apples. The spice is soft and balanced. You get both rye spice and that subtle wheat-driven warmth, layered over a creamy vanilla base.

As it develops, there is a crème brûlée effect, like lightly torched sugar just beginning to caramelize. Oak presence is well-integrated and impressive for the age, giving structure without overpowering the sweetness. Toffee and buttery caramel dominate the mid-palate, evoking soft caramel chews with a faint pinch of sea salt. There is no alcohol bite. The texture carries a light, buttery cling across the palate. The balance of sweet corn, caramel, apple, vanilla cream, and gentle pepper makes this an easy sipper that still feels layered.

Finish:
The finish lingers with sweet caramel, soft oak, and a light peppery warmth. That lingering sweetness keeps pulling you back for another sip. It is inviting, clean, and well-rounded.

Final Thoughts:
At around $45 in the California market, this feels appropriately priced. In fact, it would still feel fair closer to $50 given the profile and balance on display. For a young company sourcing and blending 3 to 4 year barrels, this is a strong showing. Abduction Whiskey 4 Grain Straight Bourbon delivers a sweet, inviting, and surprisingly complex experience. The four-grain blend exceeds expectations, showcasing how thoughtful barrel selection and blending can elevate sourced whiskey into something personal and distinctive.

Rating: B+ (Above Average).

Cost: $45.99 for 750ml.
