Backbone Bourbon Company Uncut Unfiltered Single Barrel Bourbon Review.

Backbone Bourbon Company Uncut Unfiltered Single Barrel Bourbon Review.

There’s something comforting about pouring a glass from a distillery you’ve grown to trust. Tonight's pour comes from Backbone Bourbon Company, right here in Indiana, and if you've followed along for any amount of time, you’ll know I have a soft spot for them. This single barrel, uncut straight bourbon comes in at a bold 63.8% ABV and boasts over 8 years and 8 months in the barrel. Backbone’s approach to transparency and craft has always stood out to me. Whether it's sourcing, blending, or just having fun with good whiskey, they don’t hide behind gimmicks, and that earns my respect every time.

Backbone doesn’t play coy about their whiskey’s origin. This one is sourced from MGP, proudly stated both on the bottle and their website. Again, this is a barrel proof, single barrel expression, meaning no dilution, no blending, just one specific barrel chosen for its character. This particular single barrel was selected by my buddy Rich over at Holly’s Package Store in Greentown, Indiana. The moment I heard it hit shelves, I made a beeline to grab one. Supporting local, drinking local, that’s what it’s all about.

Age Statement: 8 year 8 months.

ABV: 63.8%. (Single Barrel & Barrel Proof).

Mash bill: 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Appearance: Dark rich mahogany.

On the nose:
Immediately inviting with waves of sweet corn, toasted oak, and dark, oily richness. There's brown sugar, Madagascar vanilla bean paste, and a burst of baking spices, think cinnamon stick and clove, all layered atop dense wood sugars. It even hints at a double-oaked profile with how deep and sweet the aromas get. Over time, a delicate note of red apple adds a fresh counterpoint to the heavier elements.

Taste:
Full-bodied and bursting with flavor. Fruit-forward notes lead the way—red apple, green apple, and a touch of pear—followed by velvety oak and barrel-aged vanilla. There's richness without heat; despite its high ABV, it drinks closer to 58%. A bit of brown sugar sweetness and buttery sweet corn make their way in, with a drying finish that’s balanced by soft herbal rye spice and decadent milk chocolate. It’s layered and dangerously easy to sip, showing off the best of what a well-picked barrel can be.

Finish:
Long and lingering, with dark caramel, silky corn sweetness, and just a whisper of spice and dryness. There’s an elegant richness here, like a dessert that’s been crafted rather than baked. It's warm, but never harsh.

Final Thoughts:
This is exactly what I hope for when I see “single barrel” and “barrel proof” on a label. The transparency, the quality of the MGP distillate, and the excellent pick by Rich at Holly’s Package Store make this a standout. At the end of the day, this might be coming from a tried and true place like MGP, this is a bottle worth sharing and one that’ll absolutely leave a lasting impression.

Rating: B+ (Great).

Cost: $82.99 for 750ml.
