Fincasa Rum Barreled Finished Rye Whiskey Review.
Fincasa Rum Barreled Finished Rye Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Fincasa Whisky, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
Fincasa Whiskey quickly became one of my to go ryes finished in a rum barrel. After experiencing batch 001, I instantly cooed tell the direction they were heading was going to be great. Now we are on batch three and some hefty changes are showing! The label clearly states the barrel origin, age, and finishing time, a level of transparency that should be the industry standard and that we love to see.
Fincasa continues to source their rye from Indiana where they bumped the age from three years to five years. But what sets batch three apart is its finishing process. While batches 001 and 002 were aged in Barbados rum barrels, this expression is finished in ex-Puerto Rican rum casks for a full 12 months. After speaking to Fincasa whiskey they are planning on keeping the finishing exploration going further with sourcing barrels from other regions in the future as well.
Honestly, I think keeping your core product (a rum finished rye) changing up by picking different regions is not only smart, but a great way to stand out in the sea of whiskey right now.
Age Statement: 5 years.
ABV: 50%.
Area of Distillation: Indiana, finished and bottled in Florida.
Appearance: Raw honey.
On the nose:
On the nose:
Herbal rye spice jumps out immediately, with a layered sweetness coming from the rum cask. It’s not the bright fruit of Barbados, this is deeper, darker, and more mysterious. Notes of coconut, papaya, and warm baking spices emerge, with hints of vanilla, caramel, and wood sugars adding complexity. A light floral touch blends with a fresh mintiness, evoking a garden in bloom. It’s inviting, rich, and beautifully structured.
Taste:
Right away, the whiskey coats the tongue with an oily, viscous mouthfeel. The Indiana rye shines with bold spice, herbal intensity, and a bit of that classic rye bread quality. There's also a smoky sweetness, like grilled fruit, followed by notes of plum, fig, molasses, and ripened pineapple. The darker sugar tones, likely stemming from the Puerto Rican rum cask (possibly molasses-based), are well-integrated and elevate the whiskey's depth. Each sip unfolds with more fruit, spice, and an elegant tension between sweet and savory.
Finish:
Long, warming, and cohesive. The char from the barrel lingers gently alongside the spiced fruit notes. There’s no alcohol harshness, and each part of the experience, from nose to finish, feels polished and deliberate. Batch three comes off as more sophisticated and reserved compared to earlier releases, showing real evolution in the profile.
Final Thoughts:
Fincasa continues to impress with their thoughtful approach to barrel finishing and unwavering transparency. This is a strong contender for one of the best rum barrel finished ryes on the market today and competes confidently with the likes of Angel’s Envy. If you’re a fan of deeper, darker rum-finished whiskeys, batch three belongs on your shelf. And if this is where Fincasa is heading, the future looks incredibly bright.
