    There are finished whiskeys, and then there are experiences and this release firmly plants itself in the latter. World Whiskey Society has built a reputation on sourcing unique barrels and pushing boundaries, and this Awamori cask-finished rye might be one of their most adventurous yet. A 12-year MGP rye finished in a rarely seen rice-distillate cask immediately raises eyebrows. It’s not just a twist, it’s a full-on cultural crossover in a glass, and one that promises something completely outside the norm.

    This release begins with a well-established foundation: a 12-year-old single barrel rye sourced from Indiana, built on the classic 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill. It’s a profile many whiskey drinkers are familiar with, typically known for its bold spice and herbal character. Where things take an unexpected turn is in the finishing process. After aging, the whiskey is placed into casks that previously held Awamori, a distilled rice spirit. Unlike sake, which is brewed, Amakusa is distilled, placing it closer in style to spirits like shochu. What makes this especially intriguing is that these types of spirits are not commonly aged in barrels to begin with, making this kind of finishing cask quite rare.

    Going into it, there’s a real sense of curiosity. With so little exposure to Awamori cask finishes in the whiskey world, it’s hard to predict exactly what influence it will have.

On the nose:
    The rye spice leads the way with herbal intensity and cracked peppercorn, but it quickly opens into something more complex. There’s a distinct savory edge, lightly salty, almost umami-like, that intertwines with vanilla cream, charred cinnamon, and a gentle minty lift. It creates a profile that feels both familiar and completely new at the same time.


Taste:
    This is where the Awamori finish really shows itself. A wave of rye spice rolls in first, peppercorns, herbal notes, and a touch of floral character, before transitioning into vanilla cream and caramelized sugar, reminiscent of crème brûlée. Then comes the twist: a subtle but undeniable salty, savory layer that adds depth without overwhelming. The mouthfeel sits comfortably in the middle, coating the palate just enough to carry each flavor through its progression.


Finish:
    Medium in length with lingering oak and a soft return of that salty-sweet interplay. The spice fades gracefully, leaving behind a balanced mix of creaminess, char, and a touch of umami.


Final Thoughts: 
    This is one of those bottles that feels less like a casual pour and more like a conversation piece. The Awamori finish doesn’t just add a layer, it reshapes the entire experience, softening the sharper edges of a 95/5 rye while introducing something entirely new. There’s no denying the uniqueness and craftsmanship here. This is a bottle you bring out when you want to surprise people.
