 World Whiskey Society Awamori Cask Finished 12 Year Straight Rye Whiskey Review.

    World Whiskey Society is making quite a name for themselves for seeking out barrels from across the U.S. and beyond. Their approach often includes cask-strength releases, unique barrel finishes, and thoughtful proofing point. For this bourbon, they’ve wisely left it uncut. This bottling is part of the "Reserve Collection."

    Now, I am a person that loves unique finishes. You just never know what will work until you try! Essentially what the World Whiskey Society is doing with this Single Barrel 12 year old rye is finishing it in a Awamori cask. Now a sparks notes version on Awamori; it is a spirit distilled from long grain rice and made in Okinawa, Japan. This spirit is in a similar classification to Shochu since it is a distilled spirit. Now, I've been fortunate to have some experience with Shochu and really enjoy it! I have to admit that I am very excited to see how such a unique spirit finishing works with that classic 95/5 rye.

On the nose:
    An intriguing blend of rye spice and herbal complexity greets you first. Expect bold cracked black pepper, fresh mint, and a hint of medicinal herbal notes typical of MGP rye. The Awamori cask influence brings a surprising savory undertone, reminiscent of salted caramel or even a charred cinnamon stick. A subtle vanilla sweet cream balances the nose beautifully.


Taste:
    The first sip is a layered experience. It starts with intense rye spices—peppercorns, cinnamon, and herbal florals—before shifting into a creamy vanilla sweetness with a distinct salted char quality. Think of a brûléed dessert dusted with charred cinnamon sticks. There's a subtle umami-like savoriness, adding depth and complexity.


Finish:
    The finish is long and evolving, highlighting a harmonious balance between sweet, salty, and spiced elements. The rye’s peppery heat lingers while the Awamori cask’s savory-sweet interplay leaves a lasting impression. The unique combination creates a luxurious sipping experience that feels both familiar and entirely unexpected.


Final Thoughts: 
    This release from the World Whiskey Society exemplifies innovation through expert cask finishing. Its uniqueness and execution make it worthwhile for adventurous whiskey lovers. Its complexity and singular profile earned it an a true conversation starter for whiskey enthusiasts. This is one for the books.

Old 55 Distillery Single Barrel Cask Strength Sweet Corn Bourbon Whiskey Review.           Old 55 Distillery is a small craft operation tucked away in Newtown, Indiana, just south of Lafayette, and they’ve built a name for themselves by doing something very few dare to try, making bourbon with 100% sweet corn. Where the bottling itself is only about six months old, but the amount of passion behind the brand stems much longer.  Ryan Murray, a chiller mechanic, he took a leap of faith to turn his love for whiskey into something tangible, a move that resonates with many dreamers in the whiskey world.
