Lasso Motel Tokaji Cask Finished Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Lasso Motel Tokaji Cask Finished Bourbon Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Lasso Motel, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Lasso Motel might be a newer name in the whiskey world, but they’re already carving out a distinct identity for finishing. Now, if there's one thing I could always use more of in my life, it's Tokaji finishing. How well this finishing plays with a bourbon is unreal and so underutilized. This bourbon is sourced from Green River Distillery in Kentucky, who's been releasing some solid whiskey in recent time. Lasso Motel is refreshingly open about their sourcing, which is always appreciated. On their website, they lay out everything from state of origin to mash bill, no guessing, no gimmicks.

Now when it comes to Tokaji casks, this is a cask that previously held a sweet Hungarian dessert wine known for its bright fruit character and honeyed depth. Other distilleries like Penelope and Starlight have dabbled with this finish, even Glenmorangie! So the more the merrier in my eyes.

Age Statement: N/A.

ABV: 50%.

Mash bill: 70% corn, 21% rye, and 9% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Green River Distilling.

Appearance: Dark Amber.

On the nose:
Right out of the gate, this one leans sweet—but not cloying. The buttery corn base of the bourbon holds steady, while the rye adds a floral, herbal lift and a gentle cinnamon spice. White peaches, honey drizzle, and even a note reminiscent of peach tea (think Snapple) brings out the Tokaji influence. There’s a subtle vanilla cream, caramel, and brown sugar warmth, layered with hints of honeysuckle, pear, and even prickly pear, an unexpected but delightful twist.

Taste:
The Tokaji finish doesn’t dominate; it dances with the bourbon rather than overpowers it. White peach, pear, and soft white grapes rise first, followed by the core sweet corn and butter richness of the base bourbon. The rye spice kicks in mid-palate, playing beautifully against the wine’s fruit sweetness. A vanilla cream note builds into something almost like a spiced sweet bread, and a second sip deepens the complexity: clove, cinnamon stick, and a whisper of that distinctive wine “funk” you might find in a bold white wine.

Finish:
It lingers with poise, warm, clingy, and textured. There's a graceful transition from sweet fruits like stewed pear and apple to darker, more traditional bourbon traits: oak char, brown sugar, and sweet corn. The balance is impressive. Nothing feels lost or overdone, and the bourbon still gets to speak its truth alongside the unique Tokaji finish.

Final Thoughts:
Lasso Motel’s Tokaji-finished bourbon is a compelling pour—one that manages to honor both the base spirit and the finishing cask without sacrificing either. The transparency around sourcing and mash bill is a whiskey nerd’s dream, and the execution of the finish is a testament to thoughtful blending. A standout release from a promising new label. This one is worth a spot on your shelf.

Rating: A- (Amazing).
