Larado Whiskey Roper Reserve Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Review.
Larado Whiskey Roper Reserve Single Barrel Cask Strength Rye Whiskey Review.
I received this spirit as a review sample from Larado Whiskey, linked here. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.
More recently I've had the pleasure of reviewing the other two release from Larado and so far, I've been very impressed. Larado is based out of Colorado where they are sourcing whiskey from Indiana and bringing it back to Colorado for aging along with keeping their releases single barrel. As always there is nothing wrong with sourcing specially when you are transparent in the process like Larado is doing.
When it came to their Rye whiskey, I was instantly impressed. I loved the profile it bought with the age. It was the pentacle sip I wanted when I hear "rye whiskey." When it comes to Roper Reserve they are keeping the same mash bill as the rye but keeping it cask strength along with single barrel. I have high expectations with their barrel selection and excited to see how it holds up!
Age Statement: N/A & Single Barrel.
ABV: 62%. (Barrel Proof).
Mash bill: 51% Rye, 45% Corn, 4% Barley.
Area of Distillation: Indiana & aged in Colorado.
Appearance: Dark mahogany.
On the nose:
On the nose:
The nose opens with a bold, layered bouquet, herbal and medicinal at first, but quickly deepening into dark molasses, cedar wood shavings, and charred oak. There's also a nostalgic touch, reminiscent of cedar shavings in a woodshop, earthy, warming, and memory-evoking. Dark fruits like fig and plum begin to creep in alongside black peppercorn, caramel, and even a subtle floral note. For a cask strength whiskey, it’s shockingly approachable, no harsh ethanol, just complexity and weight.
Taste:
Right from the first sip, it hits with over-steeped black tea, a dash of medicinal herbal tone, and bold peppery spice. Despite the high ABV, it doesn’t burn, instead, it offers a warming, viscous mouthfeel that speaks to good barrel integration. Follow-up sips reveal sweet vanilla cream, charred corn off the grill, and more of that buttery sweet cornrichness from the mash. The balance here leans slightly toward bourbon territory, with the rye spice held in check by sweet grain and oak.
Finish:
Long and oily, the finish carries cinnamon stick, dark fruit, and a savory, resinous oak note that lingers. It's a rye for those who like their spice wrapped in sweetness and depth. There’s even a faint touch of floral rye as it fades, adding a final flourish of complexity.
Final Thoughts:
Larado’s Roper Reserve Cask Strength Rye is a standout pour, it is dense, warming, and full of character. It delivers what rye drinkers crave: spice, sweetness, and structure, while also catering to bourbon fans with its rich mouthfeel and approachable palate. While the lack of a formal age statement is noticeable, the whiskey itself suggests thoughtful aging and careful barrel selection. For those seeking a bold and rewarding rye experience, it’s absolutely worth the investment. It’s what you want a barrel proof rye to be: robust, layered, and deeply satisfying.
