Old Hamer Small Batch 10 Year Bourbon Whiskey Review.
Old Hamer Small Batch 10 Year Bourbon Whiskey Review.
Here locally to Indiana, West Fork Whisky Co. is one of my go to craft distillers. Not only because they release great whiskey, but always keep it priced correctly. One of their side brands, Old Hamer, is being sourced from MGP and they are transparent about that. This is taking the 99% corn, 1% barley and releasing it via age statements, finishing (under the name Hugh Hamer), single barrels, and cask strength.
I’ve previously enjoyed their 7 and 8 year offerings, but this marks their first foray into double-digit aging. With such a corn-dominant profile, the expectation is that most of the depth and character will come from the barrel itself rather than the grain.
Age Statement: 10 years.
ABV: 50%.
Mash bill: 99% Corn, 1%Malted Barley.
Area of Distillation: Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Appearance: Deep rich orange hue.
On the nose:
On the nose:
The aroma jumps out with sweet cream and vanilla, soft and welcoming. There's a richness here: thick, oily oak layered with char, a noticeable tannic backbone, and a distinct dusty corn note. The crazy part about this pour is there's a sweet herbal quality, without rye in the mash bill. A pastry-like aroma begins to emerge, think cream horns with vanilla icing, granulated sugar, and waxy sweetness. It’s indulgent and surprisingly dynamic.
Taste:
After such a vibrant and expressive nose, the palate is gentle—sweet corn buttered to perfection, kissed with light char and vanilla. The texture is coating, but not clingy. There’s that waxy mouthfeel again, along with hints of wood sugars and a restrained touch of caramel. The high ABV warmth promised on the nose is dialed back on the palate, making this a surprisingly approachable sipper.
Finish:
The finish is short to medium in length, with echoes of sweet corn, light oak, and a return of that faint herbal mystery. It’s delicate and straightforward, pleasant, but lacking the dramatic depth some might expect from a 10-year pour. That said, its simplicity is its strength.
Final Thoughts:
Old Hamer's 10-Year Straight Bourbon is a solid, easy-drinking pour that delivers a nostalgic, sweet profile while letting the barrel do most of the heavy lifting. While the nose is complex and engaging, the palate doesn’t quite match its promise. Still, taking a 99% corn mash bill bourbon, aging it this long, it offers a good value and a unique experience. It’s a great candidate for a daily pour especially for those who enjoy soft, sweet, corn-forward bourbons with a clean finish.
