Three Chord Single Barrel Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Three Chord Single Barrel Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Three Cords has been on my radar for a while now, they’ve put out some fun finished bourbons, and the toasted/honey combo they released before was downright phenomenal. So when I spotted this six-year, cask strength, single barrel double oak pick from Lake Liquors, I knew it was coming home with me. Double oaks are a personal weakness, and this one had that “buy it now or regret it later” kind of look. At $50, it was an easy decision.

This one’s sourced from Indiana, yep, we’re talking MGP. It was barreled January 18, 2016, and bottled May 22, 2023, then given the double oak treatment in a fresh new charred barrel for extra depth and sweetness. That six-year age puts it right in MGP’s sweet spot, where the bourbon still has some liveliness but has built up enough oak character to really shine. The proof sits at 55.4%, giving you all the richness you want without tipping into palate fatigue territory.

Age Statement: 6+ years.

ABV: 55.4% (Single Barrel & Barrel Proof).

Mash bill: 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Lawrenceburg, Indiana.

Appearance: Orange glow.

On the nose:
Sweet oak is front and center, wrapped in milk chocolate richness. There’s a bright pop of orange zest that keeps it lively, followed by baking spice and a touch of herbal rye. Vanilla drifts in, and the barrel char comes through like a soft campfire wisp. That chocolate-char combo leans toward toasted marshmallow without getting sugary.

Taste:
Right away, cinnamon stick and clove bring some bold spice, balanced by a brown sugar core. The double oak is powerful but not overwhelming, it’s more about richness than raw tannin. Mid-palate, there’s a darker layer with hints of roasted coffee and black tea bitterness, giving it depth. The char note ties it all together, adding a warm, toasty quality that works hand-in-hand with the sweeter elements.

Finish:
Medium-long and layered. Peppery rye spice carries through, mingling with a return of the baking spice from the nose. The sweetness shifts toward crème brûlée, that mix of caramelized sugar and creamy vanilla, while the oak lingers just enough to keep it grounded. Drinks older than six years, feeling closer to an eight-year profile in complexity.

Final Thoughts:
This is a killer single barrel pick. Lake Liquors clearly knew what they were doing, this one has all the MGP hallmarks I love, wrapped up in a double oak package that delivers big flavor without going overboard. I’d take this over Woodford Double Oak in the same price range without hesitation. If it had just one more year in the barrel, we might be talking A- territory.

Rating: B+ (Great).

Cost: $49.99 for 750ml.
