Penelope Wheated Bourbon Whiskey Review.

 Penelope Wheated Bourbon Whiskey Review.

Penelope has become a household name in the bourbon world, and for good reason. Their transparency around sourcing and blending, especially with access to MGP stocks since their acquisition, has led to some exciting releases. With the Weeded Bourbon, Penelope is offering something approachable and shelf-stable, an everyday pour that doesn’t break the bank.

This release is a four-grain bourbon and is only 1% different compared to their standard four-grain. It shifts slightly, boosting the wheat while trimming the barley, a subtle but interesting tweak. The whiskey is aged four to six years, with a blend that includes some older barrels for added depth. At a price point generally ranging from $30–$40, it aims squarely at the budget-friendly market while offering a higher proof than their standard four-grain expression.

Age Statement: 4 years.

ABV: 47.5%.

Mash bill: 74% corn, 16% wheat, 7% rye, and 3% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Lwrenceburg, Indiana.

Appearance:

On the nose:
The first impression is a wave of sweetness balanced with spice. Buttery corn and cinnamon sugar hit right away, followed by tart green apple and orchard fruits like pear and peach. Clove, nutmeg, and brown sugar from the rye spice round it out beautifully. A little ethanol warmth lingers but never dominates.

Taste:
The sweetness continues with notes of grilled sweet corn, a drizzle of honey over granola, and a light earthiness. The wheat adds a smooth, mellow quality, while the rye brings herbal spice and warmth. Unexpectedly, the low malt content still delivers a touch of waxiness and oiliness, giving the whiskey a clingy mouthfeel. Layers of cinnamon, nutmeg, and peppercorn spice keep it lively and balanced against the orchard fruit.

Finish:
Medium in length with a soft, oily spice that lingers gently. The finish echoes with peppercorn, green apple tartness, and a drizzle of honey. It’s approachable and comforting, a pour that invites another sip without being heavy-handed.

Final Thoughts:
Penelope Weeded Bourbon shows that a thoughtful blend and proof bump can elevate a bottle well beyond its price point. Sweet, spicy, and approachable, it feels like an everyday pour that overdelivers in the sub-$35 range. At $40, it edges toward competition with other mid-shelf bourbons, but still holds its ground as a solid buy. Balanced and easygoing. A bottle I’d happily keep around for casual sipping or cocktails.

Rating: B- (Fairly good).

Cost: $29.99 for 750ml.
