Dark Arts Whiskey House Toasted Amburana Rye Whiskey Review.
Dark Arts Whiskey House has built a strong reputation in the blending and finishing world, often sourcing well-aged stock and applying creative secondary maturation. This particular release is a straight rye whiskey, aged between 7 and 8½ years, then finished with toasted Amberana oak staves. It’s a bold move, because Amburana is one of the more divisive finishing woods in modern whiskey.
As someone who genuinely enjoys Amburana finishing, I went into this pour excited. I’ve had stunning examples of this wood treatment and others that felt overwhelming. After maturation, the whiskey is finished with toasted Amburana staves. Amburana is a dense South American hardwood known for delivering an explosive cinnamon-sugar character. The toasting process can mellow some of its sharper edges, but if left too long, it can easily dominate a whiskey.

On the nose:
On the nose:
The Amburana announces itself immediately. Sweet cinnamon sugar leads the way, almost oily in texture. Buttercream vanilla follows close behind. Beneath that dessert-like top layer, the rye refuses to disappear. Fresh-cut green herbs, light florals, and a faint medicinal edge create balance. There’s also a soft herbal tea note that brings freshness to the profile. Oak char, caramel, and vanilla round things out without feeling heavy. Importantly, there’s no harsh ethanol bite despite the 54% ABV.
Taste:
The mouthfeel is oily and viscous, coating the palate in a way that amburana finished whiskeys often do. Cinnamon sugar again takes center stage, but this time it’s joined by pronounced rye spice and herbal intensity. Floral rye notes pop through, alongside buttercream vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak. A touch of black pepper adds lift. As it develops, a subtle orchard fruit sweetness emerges, think fresh red apple with a dusting of cinnamon. It feels like a simple fall dessert: sliced apple, grated cinnamon stick, and just a pinch of sugar.
Finish:
Long and clinging. The cinnamon sugar lingers for quite a while, wrapped in herbal rye spice and gentle barrel char. It’s warming without being hot. While the finish is satisfying, I do find myself wishing for a bit more depth from the rye itself. Some of the more nuanced herbal or tea-like notes from the nose fade slightly on the palate and finish.
Final Thoughts:
This is a very good example of Amberana finishing done with restraint. The rye is not completely overshadowed, which is an accomplishment given how powerful this wood can be. At around $75, it feels like a fair value for a 7 to 8½ year rye with a specialty finish and solid proof. Closer to $90, it becomes more of a “know what you’re getting into” purchase.
I would have loved to see just a touch more rye complexity push through, especially given the solid age range. Still, for fans of cinnamon-forward profiles and fall-inspired pours, this is an enjoyable and well-executed whiskey.
Rating: B- (Fairly good).
