Three Floyds Distilling Bottled in Bond Malted Wheat Whiskey Review.

Three Floyds Distilling Bottled in Bond Malted Wheat Whiskey.

Three Floyds Distilling is a name I find myself revisiting more often than I ever expected. Based out of Munster, Indiana, they built their reputation in the beer world with cult favorites like Zombie Dust and Gumballhead before shifting serious focus toward distillation. Over the last several years, that same creative energy has clearly carried over into their spirits lineup. Wolfborne immediately stood out to me because it represents something truly uncommon in American whiskey, a bottled in bond malted wheat whiskey built around a mash bill that most distilleries would never attempt. As soon as I saw the grain breakdown, I knew this was a bottle I had to spend time with.

Wolforne is distilled, aged, and bottled entirely by Three Floyds using a single pot still and meets all bottled in bond requirements.

Age Statement: 4 years (bottled in bond).

ABV: 50%.

Mash bill: 56% Malted wheat & 44% malted barley.

Area of Distillation: Munster, Indiana.

Appearance: Dark honey.

On the nose:
The first impression is surprisingly sweet but not in the way most people expect from wheat whiskey. Instead of grain-forward sweetness, it opens with a strong banana bread note that feels warm and familiar. There is a light nuttiness underneath, along with soft wheat spice and a gentle ribbon of vanilla and caramel. The oak presence is restrained, allowing the malted grains to remain the star. It feels balanced, inviting, and far more mature than its age suggests.

Taste:
That banana bread character carries straight through to the palate, now leaning slightly toward underripe or green banana in a very pleasant way. The mouthfeel is unique, offering a touch of thickness while remaining clean and precise. Baking spices like cinnamon and freshly grated nutmeg appear alongside soft vanilla creaminess. There is no harsh alcohol heat, no bitterness, and nothing that feels rushed or underdeveloped. The barley contributes a subtle waxy quality that brings to mind well-aged Irish whiskey, adding another layer of intrigue.

Finish:
The finish is soft, warming, and gently spiced. Banana, light nutty sweetness, and mellow wheat spice linger without becoming cloying or overly dry. While the profile does not dramatically evolve sip to sip, it remains incredibly enjoyable and cohesive from start to finish.

Final Thoughts:

Three Floyds Wolforne is one of the most distinctive craft whiskey releases I have tasted in recent memory. At just four years old, it already shows impressive balance and confidence, making me genuinely excited about what this mash bill could become with additional age. I paid $46.99 at Costco, though most shelves seem to land closer to the mid-to-high $50 range. Even at that price, I find it more than justified given the uniqueness and quality on display.

Rating: A- (Amazing).

Cost: $46.99 for 750ml.
