Black Market Spirits Cask Strength 3 Year Rye Whiskey Review.

Black Market Spirits Single Barrel 3 Year Rye Whiskey
I received this spirit as a review sample from Black Market Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Black Market Spirits, based out of California, has been quietly building an interesting portfolio. From gin and vodka to even a hemp spirit, they clearly enjoy pushing creative boundaries. But they’re also doing something equally important: sourcing quality whiskey from established Kentucky distilleries. In this case, they went to one of the oldest distilleries in the state, Green River. Everything I’ve had from Green River has been solid, so expectations were already high going in.

Black Market keeps things transparent, mash bill disclosed, sourcing, single barrel clearly labeled. That kind of honesty earns respect immediately.

Age Statement: 3 years (Single barrel).

ABV: 55% (Cask strength).

Mashbill: 95% Rye, 5% barley.

Area of Distillation: Owensboro, Kentucky.

Appearance: Deep golden.

On the nose:
The aroma is beautifully herbal and expressive. Think freshly gathered sage, thyme, mint, and cracked rye grain. There’s a soft char note, light caramel drizzle, vanilla sweetness, and a hint of green apple tartness. What’s impressive is how gentle it smells for barrel proof, there’s no harshness, no ethanol burn. It drinks closer to 50% on the nose.

Taste:
The texture coats the palate immediately. Spicy, earthy rye character leads the charge, followed by green apple brightness and floral undertones. There’s a sweet pastry-like quality that develops mid-palate, almost like apple pie built on green apples rather than red. The herbal character carries through beautifully without becoming savory. Sage, mint, cracked rye spice, and a touch of citrus zest pop toward the back.

Finish:
Long and evolving. Peppery rye spice lingers alongside soft sweetness and subtle earthiness. A slight citrus note flickers at the end, giving it lift before it fades cleanly.

Final Thoughts:
This is a gorgeous rye. Sweet, spicy, herbal, and layered without ever drinking hot. The jump from the 5-year expression I previously rated a B+ to this barrel proof single barrel is noticeable. The added intensity gives it more dimension without sacrificing balance.

Rating: -A (Amazing).

Cost: $89.99 for 750ml.
