Black Market Spirits Single Barrel Cask Strength 3 Year Rye Whiskey Review.

Black Market Spirits Single Barrel Cask Strength 3 Year Rye Whiskey Review.

I received this spirit as a review sample from Black Market Spirits. It is important to clarify this did not impact the ratings of this review.

Black Market Spirits is based out of California where they are releasing some fun and unique spirits to the masses. In 2023 I had the pleasure of reviewing their core line up containing a Vodka, Rum, Gin, Fernet, and Rye. That release was a 2 year old and I really enjoyed it. Now this release is something special. Essentially, this being sourced from the 10th oldest distillery in Kentucky, Green River. And what Black Market Spirits is doing is finding those select special barrels of rye, keeping it single barrel, barrel proof, and a 3 year age statement on it. Honestly, everything I've had from Green River has been top notch. Plus, the fact that Black Market Spirits is transparent on this is a huge plus in my books. And of November 2024, this is a distillery exclusive so do keep this in mind.

Age Statement: 3 years.

ABV: 55% (Cask strength).

Mashbill: 95% Rye, 5% barley.

Area of Distillation: Owensboro, Kentucky.

Appearance: Deep golden.

On the nose:
First impressions gives a fragrant, herbal bouquet. Imagine walking into an organic market’s fresh herb section. A blend of sage, thyme, and mint, with a subtle sweetness in the background. There’s also an inviting wood char, layered with hints of caramel and vanilla. Despite the high ABV, there’s no harshness, showing a soft, balanced nose.

Taste:
The first sip greets the palate with a rich medley of flavors, where a sweet-tart green apple note blends with earthy rye and spices. An underlying herbal freshness unfolds, accentuated by sage and mint, that complements a sweetness reminiscent of pastry dough. As it develops, the sweetness becomes more pronounced, almost like a baked apple pie, with the green apple character bringing brightness to the experience. The herbal complexity is anchored by a light vanilla and caramel undertone, giving a balanced richness and depth to each sip with a bit of barrel char.

Finish:
The finish lingers with a gentle warmth, marked by a peppery rye spice and a slight waxiness from the malted barley, offering a unique textural quality. A pop of citrus, like a hint of orange zest, adding a refreshing element to the herbal and peppery notes that echo the nose. This final, evolving blend of pepper, earthiness, and subtle sweetness leaves a memorable impression.

Final Thoughts:
Black Market Spirits has selected a rye that excels in transparency and quality. This single-barrel, cask strength rye has an impressive, well-rounded character, hitting every mark with its spice, sweetness, and herbal complexity. A stellar sip worth every dollar, especially for fans of bold, complex rye. Black Market Spirits has set a high bar here, and being a distillery exclusive currently, it is worth visiting them for the release.
