Hard Truth Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon Whiskey Review.
Hard Truth Distilling has become one of the most recognizable craft distilleries coming out of Indiana in recent years. Known primarily for their sweet mash rye whiskey, the distillery has steadily been expanding into bourbon as well. While some of their earlier bourbons felt fairly standard, the newer releases with higher age statements and barrel proof offerings have started to show real promise.
This particular bottle is a distillery-selected single barrel called Decadence. Bottled at cask strength and just shy of five years old, it represents Hard Truth leaning into their sweet mash process while allowing the barrel to fully speak for itself. Like all of their whiskey, it is made using the sweet mash fermentation method. Rather than continuously using leftover mash from previous batches like the sour mash process, sweet mash starts with a completely clean fermentation tank each time. It is a more labor intensive approach but often results in a cleaner and more distinct spirit.
Age Statement: 4 years, 11 months, & 11 days. (Single barrel).
ABV: 55.6% (Cask strength).
Mash bill: 73% corn, 19% rye, and 8% malted barley.

The aroma is immediately inviting with a deep sweetness that leans toward dark caramel and wood sugars. Vanilla bean paste rises alongside a pleasant charred oak note. A gentle rye spice sits underneath the sweetness, adding balance without overpowering the nose. There is also a subtle herbal note, a touch of clove, and an unexpected hint of peach sun tea that adds complexity. A light waxiness from the malted barley rounds out the aroma nicely.
Taste:
The first sip brings a rich, velvety mouthfeel that coats the palate beautifully. Sweet corn and buttery notes form the base of the flavor profile while layers of oak spice begin to unfold. Herbal and slightly medicinal tones appear alongside hints of tobacco. There is a walnut-like character that adds depth, followed by a dark cocktail cherry note that lingers beneath the sweetness.
Mid-palate introduces an interesting flavor reminiscent of simple brewed coffee. Not a fancy espresso style note, but something closer to a classic cup of coffee you might grab on the road. It adds warmth and familiarity while the wood sugars and light peppery spice build toward the finish.
Finish:
The finish carries a pleasant peppery spice along with lingering oak and tea-like notes. The subtle sun tea character returns here, giving the whiskey a refreshing complexity that feels impressive for a bourbon under five years old.
Final Thoughts:
Hard Truth has clearly been refining their bourbon program, and this single barrel shows just how much potential the distillery has. The whiskey delivers a surprisingly mature profile for its age with excellent balance between sweetness, oak, and spice. It also drinks far softer than its barrel proof strength might suggest.
At around $65, it offers excellent value for a craft distillery release, especially one that is distilled, aged, and bottled entirely in house. The depth of flavor and texture easily allow it to compete with many established barrel proof bourbons on the market.
