Tres Agaves Single Barrel Extra Añejo Tequila Review.
This bottle caught me completely off guard, in the best way possible. Tres Agaves was a name I hadn’t spent much time with, and honestly, I assumed it leaned more toward budget-friendly territory. That perception changed fast after some digging online and a conversation at Market District in the Indianapolis area, where I learned this was something special. This single barrel Extra Añejo store pick is believed to be the first of its kind, and with an age statement of 74 months, it immediately demanded attention.
Only 138 bottles were produced from this barrel, and mine happens to be bottle number 26. Seeing an Extra Añejo with over six years of aging at a shockingly approachable price already had me intrigued. Add in the fact that this was aged in Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey barrels, and suddenly this tequila felt like it was speaking my language.
Age Statement: 74 months. (Single Barrel).
ABV: 40%.
Mash bill: 100% Blue weber agave.
Area of Distillation: NOM 1614.
Appearance: Deep pale amber.
On the nose:
The aroma is downright stunning. Sweet, rich cooked agave leads the charge, followed by a velvety cedar note that adds depth and elegance. There’s a gentle white pepper spice, toasted coconut, and just a hint of bourbon barrel warmth. What’s most impressive is what isn’t there, no harsh alcohol, no sharp edges. If you didn’t know better, you might not even guess this was tequila.
Taste:
The first sip is lush and silky. Cooked agave remains the backbone, joined by white pepper, cinnamon, brown sugar, and a subtle fruit sweetness that leans toward papaya. Cedar and light herbal notes weave through the mid-palate, with a touch of oiliness that adds weight and structure. The bourbon barrel influence brings vanilla and spice without ever overpowering the agave.
Finish:
Long, warm, and incredibly refined. The spice lingers softly alongside cedar, gentle sweetness, and a faint herbal note that keeps things interesting. It’s complex, balanced, and endlessly sippable.
Final Thoughts:
For $75, this bottle is almost unbelievable. A single barrel Extra Añejo aged over six years, with this level of depth and polish, feels like a unicorn in today’s market. This is the definition of a sipping tequila and a bottle that bridges the gap beautifully between whiskey and agave spirits. If you ever come across a Tres Agaves single barrel pick, do not hesitate.
Rating: +A (Perfection).
Cost: $74.99 for 750ml.
